The May issue of Hakusensha's Monthly LaLa magazine announced that Yuki Midorikawa's Natsume Yuujinchou manga is getting season 5, titled Natsume Yuujinchou Go, this fall. The issue also shows a 46-page chapter of the manga which have a color opening page.

All of the anime's main staff members in the previous anime series are returning for this season. Takahiro Omori, who directs all the previous television anime seasons, is the chief director at the studio Shuka. Kotomi Deai is the director. He previously directed fourth season and Natsume Yuujinchou: Nyanko-sensei to Hajimete no Otsukai original video anime. Sadayuki Murai, attended in anime's third and fourth seasons, will handle series composition. Akira Takata is the characters designer and Tatsuo Yamada is the monsters designer. Yukihiro Shibutani is in charge of art and Hiromi Miyawaki is in charge of color setting. Photography handled by Hitoshi Tamura and editing handled by Kazuhiko Seki. Makoto Yoshimori will compose the music. NAS is in charge of production.

The anime seasons and Midorikawa's original manga focus on Natsume, a boy who has the ability to see ghosts since he was little. One day, he inherits Yuujinchou ("Book of Friends") from his grandmother.

The anime's fourth season premiered in 2012. The manga began serialization in Hakusensha's manga magazine LaLa DX in 2005, before switching to LaLa in 2008.
